Father's Rights

The image of the blissful 1950's housewife and mother, looking fresh in her apron and ready to serve her husband with his after work cocktail and a hot dinner has been replaced with two working parents and dinner at the drive-through.  As more and more women join the work force, more and more men are taking an active role in their children's lives.  There are even some Stay-at-Home-Dads. While the laws of the State of Texas do not favor a mother over a father in a custody case, there is a long-standing perception that Texas Judges and Courts more often grant custody of children to mothers over fathers.

When a couple divorces or separates, sharing parenting responsibilities can become very difficult, often because the divorcing or separating parents are too hurt or angry to communicate effectively with each other or cooperate in the raising of their children.

However, studies have shown that children who have fathers in their lives learn better, have higher self-esteem and show fewer signs of depression than children without fathers. In addition, children who perceive their fathers as supportive feel a greater sense of social acceptance and show fewer signs of depression.

There are extreme cases where one parent, actively seeks to endanger or eliminate the relationship between the children and the other parent. This is often called parental alientation syndrome, although this term is not recognized as a true diagnosis.
